How Digital Product Passports (DPPs) can help verify sustainability data on the road to the decarbonisation of supply chainsIn today's world supply chains are so complex that it is hard to verify what materials and products are produced sustainable, and which are not. Digital technologies hold a crucial part in that verification process. Creating Digital Product Passports that evolve along the supply chain, ranging from raw materials to finished goods (often many tiers down), can demonstrate a cumulative build up of their sourcing composition as well as associated CO2-emissions. Join Brian Smits to learn how, through digital traceability of materials, suppliers, OEMs, and other stakeholders can more accurately measure LCA- and carbon footprint data of produced/purchased products which allows them to make more informed- and sustainable decisions. Exploring the potential of hydrogen for decarbonizing heating processes of the European Aluminium IndustryThe decarbonization of heating processes is one of the most significant challenges faced by the energy intensive industry towards the green transition. It can be pursued through two major routes: electrification or used of low-carbon fuel, as green hydrogen. Electrification entails the use of renewable electricity to power heating systems, eliminating the reliance on fossil fuels and significantly reducing carbon emissions. On the other hand, hydrogen represents an innovative and promising alternative for decarbonizing heating processes. Green Hydrogen can be produced through electrolysis using renewable energy sources, resulting in clean, emissions-free fuel. However, the adoption of green hydrogen in heating processes requires overcoming safety, technical and infrastructure challenges, as well as ensuring a sustainable and cost-effective hydrogen supply chain. European Aluminium's Innovation Hub actively engages with stakeholders and the aluminium industry to support and foster the collaboration amongst the players of the entire value chain. The challenges associated with hydrogen, particularly regarding economic and technical feasibility together with the environmental and social impact, have led to the initiation of two EU Horizon Europe projects launched in January 2023 SpeakerChristian LeroyDirector InnovationEuropean Aluminium![]() Christian Leroy joined European Aluminium in January 2014 as Consultant in charge of Innovation and Life Cycle Assessment. Previously, as full-time employee of European Aluminium since 1999, he was in charge of various functions covering education, technology and environmental fields. He holds a Ph.D. and Master degree in Process Engineering from “Université Catholique de Louvain” in Belgium. Christian is currently Director Innovation, managing the Innovation Hub of European Aluminium. This collaborative industrial platform aims to trigger research projects that target prioritised technology and raw materials challenges for decarbonising and circularising the industry. The Innovation Hub aims to match more effectively the priorities of the European Aluminium Industry with the EU innovation agenda and funding programme, especially within “Horizon Europe” programme. For such purpose, the European aluminium industry is engaged in 3 key Public Private Partnerships (PPPs): Processes4 Planet (previously SPIRE), Made in Europe (previously “Factories of the Future”) and Built4People (previously “Energy-efficient Buildings”). Currently, the innovation Hub secretariat is composed of a team of 4 experts and is involved in 10 collaborative projects, 7 of them being Horizon 2020 or Horizon Europe projects. Driving demand for sustainable materials: A sustainable net zero way of living needs carbon neutral productsCarbon neutral products can only be a produced in decarbonised supply chains, with reliable availability of low carbon materials, designed for each product application and for product and material re-use. Policy can help drive ambitious innovation. New policies to create markets for low-carbon basic materials are badly needed to incentivise innovation that is still required to decarbonise virgin basic materials production. To be effective, these policies will need to address all stages of the industrial production value chain, including incentivising innovation and facilitating market diffusion through increased demand downstream. But as, if not more, important, market-pull and supply chain collaboration is also vital to initiate transformation. Commitment from key end users will create a significant shift in demand for sustainable products and materials. This will drive the supply chain to decarbonise through specification and procurement of innovative low-carbon materials, both incentivising market transformation and ensuring that any new innovations have a ready market for deployment. I will present case studies from world leading UK supply chains, demonstrating the transformative impact that matching policy pushes and market pulls can create for sustainable manufacturing with wide ranging applicability across all of the foundation industries and manufacturing sectors.
